The Guild was started in the early 1980’s by a group of people who loved woodworking and wanted to share their knowledge, skill and passion with like-minded people and the community. Guild members come from different walks of life; builders, carpenters or self-taught and have a vast amount of knowledge and skill and are willing to share.
So, how do you learn to woodwork? We provide formal and informal training to new and current members. Many new members joined, not ever having worked with wood before.
Each day we have a Duty Officer at the Guild who will be able to provide informal training by passing on their knowledge and skill to you. Other members are also willing and able to assist you in honing your skills. COVID put a bit of a dent into our formal training but we hope to be back on track soon. Being part of the Guild encompasses many aspects that you will participate in the fun stuff; woodworking and social events, the day-to-day stuff; meetings, fundraising, maintenance, all these things keep the Guild open and safe. But also, and just as importantly, a place where you can go to feel welcome, relax, sit, have a coffee and a chat and build friendships.
We hope that the information below will help you decide if the Guild is the right place for you. You are also welcome to visit the Guild to chat to members and have a look around before you decide. Membership is on a yearly basis and open to any member of the community (12+ years) interested in woodworking. Please read the Handbook and Code of Conduct to learn more about how we operate. Should you be interested in joining, complete the membership application form and give it to the duty officer during opening hours or email through our contact page and let us know the name of the duty officer you spoke to on the day you visited. Note: There are two forms; membership application and the last page of the handbook.
The Guild is open to the community and welcomes anyone who wants to have a look at what we do or are maybe looking for that special gift.
